Tree, wave and peak fine line on a heel
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare foot, viewed from the side with the heel in focus. Four small, thin black outlines sit in a row on the skin: a triangular tree, a wavy line, a curved C-like stroke and a peaked mountain shape. The single-weight linework is clean and the ink is black and grey, with a plain blurred background.

The barge Tern had lain against the towpath at Shardlow so long that willows had grown over her cabin roof, and the lock-keeper's boy swore the ducks were paying rent. Maud Harrow came aboard the morning after the flood with a sack of onions, a tin kettle and a map her grandmother had drawn on the back of a coal bill. The old woman had said the river would show the way to the sea if you asked it politely.

The map had four marks in ink that had run in the damp. A tree leaning over a bend, a wave with a tail like a fish, a curled hook for a weir and a peak with a flag. Maud took them as directions. She poled past the tree, which was an oak split down the middle, and tied up at the wave where the water folded over a sunken sill and the hull bucked like a frightened horse. The weir she crossed in the dark by the lock gate, her palms raw on the rope, and only at dawn did she see the peak was not a hill at all but the chimney of a brickworks, its flag a washing line strung between two sheds.
She sat on the cabin step with the onions in her lap and understood her grandmother had never drawn a route. She had only drawn what she passed, the way you might count the stairs in a house you were leaving. Maud took the pencil from behind her ear and, beneath the peak, drew a small kettle with steam rising from its spout.
Then she untied the rope, pushed off from the willows and let the current take the Tern downstream, toward the sea, one mark at a time.
