Thistle tattoo down a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
The design shows several purple thistle flower heads on long, curling green stems with spiky leaves that wrap down the leg. The linework is bold and smooth, with soft grey shading giving the stems and leaves some depth. Purple and green ink dominate, with small touches of orange and pink, and the design follows the curve of the calf.

The thistle had come up again through the cinder path behind the mill, and Nan Haddow stood over it with the shears in one hand and her apron pocket full of last year's seed heads, deciding whether she was cross or only tired. It was the purple heads that did it. Every summer they opened like small furious ink pots, and every September the wind carried them over the yard wall and into her father's beds.

"You'll have it up the drainpipe by Whitsun," her father said from the doorway of the seed shed. He wiped his hands on a rag that had once been a shirt. "Leave it. Mrs Pringle wants a border of it for the church fête and she'll pay for the trouble."
Nan did not leave it. She knelt on the damp stones and worked the shears under the root the way her father had taught her, and the stem came away with a sound like a sigh. Its spines caught the thin wool of her cardigan. Under the leaves, where the stalk had wound round the drainpipe in a long slow curl, she found a snail shell the colour of weak tea and a brass button she recognised as Tam's, lost the summer he left for Edinburgh and never came back for it.
She did not cut the rest. She carried the cutting to the back wall, dug a hole with the trowel, and set the roots in with her fingers. Then she wrote a note on the back of a seed invoice, folded it into an envelope with a twist of thistle seed, and addressed it to Tam Haddow, care of the railway hostel in Carlisle.
The post van came on Thursday. By the first week of August the thistle had climbed the wall and was flowering purple above the gate, and the wind was taking its seed out over the town as if it had somewhere to be.
