Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists with dark nail polish are shown side by side. The left wrist has a pale outlined triangle with three small black stars beside it, and the right wrist has a group of four small black stars. The linework is thin and the shapes are simple, set against plain skin on a light background.

Mind the lift on the third floor, it sticks between the landings, and the night sister will tell you it doesn't, but she has never once been stuck in it. Old Mrs Ashby said this to every new porter who came on at St Columba's, then pulled her cardigan over her knees on the radiator in the corridor and told them about the Carrow sisters, because the nights were long and the ward was quiet and nobody ever asked her to stop.

In the winter of 1941 Hettie, Bea and Nan Carrow walked the blackout road back from the emergency ward together, three abreast under a sky so thick with stars it looked spilt. Sirens came and went. To keep their feet steady they picked out shapes, and the three nearest stars over the cricket field made a triangle that Nan swore pointed the way home. Hettie, who never believed anything she could not check on a chart, counted four more scattered off to the east and called them the spare pieces. They had a rule that whoever reached the ward first at dawn would put the kettle on for the others.
Bea was posted abroad in the spring and never came back up that road. Hettie and Nan kept the rule for a year, which meant Nan stood at the back gate with the kettle while Hettie watched the sky from the top window at the same hour every night, looking for the triangle to be whole again. It never quite was. The fourth star in the east had gone out of the chart altogether, and Hettie said it was only hiding behind the chimney stack.
So when you come on at midnight, Mrs Ashby would say, you look for three stars, and then four, and if you only get four you make the triangle yourself. Then she would tap the radiator twice, which was the signal the lift was working again, and go back to her chair.
