Small paper boat on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on white bedding, showing a small solid black tattoo of a folded paper boat or plane on the outer ankle. Part of a second mark, possibly a letter, is cut off just below it. The linework is simple and clean, and the image is in natural colour with soft, even lighting and a plain white background.

Dear Tomas, the guard at the checkpoint turned my coat pockets out this morning and found nothing but a square of graph paper, which I suppose looked like a set of plans. He couldn't read the Polish I'd written on it, so he handed it back with a shrug. I folded it into a boat on the footbridge while he watched, the way Mama used to fold bread wrappers for us, and let it go on the brown water under the railings.

The river runs under both flags here, and nobody on either bank owns the middle of it. That was the thing you always said when we were children, that the water doesn't need a passport. I believed you then. I have stood at this rail every Thursday since the spring, folding one boat each time, and every Thursday the current has carried it somewhere past the wire.
Last week a fisherman from your side, a thin man in a wool hat, waved at me from his little skiff and held something up. It was one of my boats, soaked and flattened, with my handwriting still legible on the inside fold. He had pulled it out of the reeds below the village. I did not know whether to laugh or sit down on the wet concrete, so I did both.
So I am writing to say the boats are arriving. Write back on paper, fold it the way you like with the corner tucked under twice, and push it into the reeds by the old mill. I will look for it on Thursday. If the wind is wrong, wait a week. The river is patient, and so am I, mostly.
