Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of an open triangle above a stylised t-like stroke, drawn in thin black lines on the ankle. The boundary-walker's daughter carried the chalk that spring, because her father's hands had started to shake, and every March they walked the edge of the wood from Hollin Ford to the leaning stone at Cold Acre. Where the beeches gave way to bracken she marked the bark with an open triangle, point up, the way the old surveyors cut it, and beneath it a single upright stroke with a short hook at the top. Her father said the triangle kept the trees honest and the stroke kept the path open. Nobody in Hollin knew which of them had the better reason.

The village believed the wood moved in the night, each tree stepping forward a foot while no one watched, and that the marks were the only thing that held it back. So the girl walked the line every dawn and renewed what the frost had worn away. One morning she found a mark already there, fresh and pale, on a beech on the far side of the boundary where no village tree had any business to grow.
She followed the marks through the bracken to a hollow where an old woman sat on an upturned bucket, cutting the same two shapes with a knife no longer than a finger. "You're late," the woman said, without looking up. "I've been keeping the far side since before your father was born. Somebody has to do the work that doesn't get thanked." They cut the line together until the light went thin and the rooks came home.
Walking back, the girl saw that the beeches had stood still all afternoon, exactly where they were. Her father was waiting at the gate with a lamp. He looked at the chalk dust on her fingers, then at the dark trees, and nodded once, as if a debt had been paid by someone else.
