Small sailboat tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sailboat outline sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin black lines with a triangular mainsail, a jib and a curved hull. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The close crop shows the tattoo centred in the frame, with a red beaded bracelet and a white cord bracelet on the wrist above it.

Dearest Maren, the jib on the little Tern came off its stay again this morning, so I have spent the whole afternoon on the slip with Old Tobiah cursing the rigging and the gulls cursing us both. I am writing from the bench outside the boathouse because the lamp inside has gone out and I have no oil to spare until the Thursday boats come in from Carrow.

You asked in your last letter whether the King of Ysmere still sends his summer fleet round the Cape of Knives. He does, though the fleet is smaller now: nine hulls where there used to be forty. Tobiah says the sea took the rest and the crown took what the sea left. Still, every spring the harbourmaster paints a fresh white sail on the board by the gate, and every spring someone steals the brush.

Yesterday a boy came asking for passage to the outer islands. He had no coin, only a chart drawn on the back of a bread wrapper and a sketch of a boat his grandfather once sailed, he swore. I told him the Tern does not carry boys who cannot tie a reef knot. He tied one for me, then another, then unpicked them both and tied a third so tight I could not undo it with my teeth. I have agreed to take him on the morning tide. Tobiah has agreed to pretend he never saw him.

If the Tern does not sink by Friday, I will write again from the far side of the Knives. Keep the lamp lit for me, the way you always did when I was out past the bar. Your loving sister, Ilse.
