Two overlapping triangles on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black ink tattoo of two overlapping triangle outlines sits on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even, with the empty triangles showing only their edges. The hand rests on a grey-beige surface against a soft, out-of-focus background, and a silver ring is visible on another finger.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Past the water tower at Halden Cross, where the line bends twice before it reaches the sea, there was a signalman who kept two lamps on the same post. Nobody asked him why. The trains came through in the dark, and the drivers knew that when the upper lamp showed green over the lower one, the points were set true and the line was clear.

His name was Oswin Pell, and he walked the track each evening with a tin of oil and a notebook. In the notebook he wrote the time of every train, and beside each one he drew a small mark: a triangle pointing up, then a second one laid over it, so the two shared a base line and the top of one cut through the other. He said it was how he kept count. The stationmaster thought it was a waste of ink.

One winter a goods train came in too fast on the wet rails, and the driver, a young woman called Hetty Vane, saw the lamps flicker from green to red and back again in the same breath. She stopped with her wheels a yard from the points. Afterwards she asked Oswin how he had known to check. He showed her the notebook. The overlapping shapes were there on the page for the night before, drawn small and careful.

"The lamps have to agree with each other," he said. "If one is wrong, the other is a lie. I only draw what I've checked twice."

Hetty took the notebook home and never gave it back. The lamp post still stands at Halden Cross, and the drivers still say that where the two lights overlap, the line is true.
