Tribal bands tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of two mirrored bands of black tribal linework on the upper arm, with the design extending from the shoulder area down towards the elbow. The bands combine bold spiked edges, triangular zigzag patterns and curling swirls in solid black ink with some grey tones where the shading is lighter. The skin is shown against a dark top and blue background, and the arm fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oseli had been told twice that the paddle was finished, and twice she had turned it over in the lamplight to find another notch that wanted cutting. Her master, old Tavi Ruhe, sat on the sea wall with his pipe gone cold, watching the tide come in over the reef the way he watched everything, as if it owed him an answer.

The king's boat-men would take the paddles at dawn. Each blade had to be the twin of its pair, so that when two rowers dipped together the water would part the same on either side. Oseli had spent a month on the bands: a row of sharp fern-spikes along the edge, a zigzag like shark teeth running between, and at the grip a curl the old carvers called the turning wave. She cut the left side first, then sat with her palms flat against the wood, counting the grooves by touch.

Ruhe came down the shingle at midnight with a second lamp. He did not look at the carving. He took a wet cloth, rubbed soot into the first band, then the second, and showed her how the grey settled into the hollows. "Mirror is not copy," he said. "A copy only agrees with itself. A mirror has to disagree in the right places, or nobody sees the water in it."

At dawn the boat-men lifted the paddles onto their shoulders and carried them out to the shallows without a word. Oseli watched the spikes flash as the oars struck, and the two bands broke the surface together, one dark arc chasing the other across the bay. Ruhe lit his pipe at last. "There," he said, and went home to sleep.
