Tribal Cancer zodiac design

Mixed · Flash

A bold tribal design drawn on a plain white background, with the Cancer zodiac symbol formed from two interlocking curls at its centre. Thick black swirling linework sweeps out on either side and curves below, with purple shapes running alongside the black. The composition is symmetrical and flat, with solid colour fills and no shading.

Dear Nell, the fair came into Whitstable on Tuesday with the wagons still smelling of brine from the last seaside pitch, and Mr Oakes has put me on the lucky dip. That means I stand at a trestle table holding a tin bucket of sticky toffees and tell every child the same thing: you'll find what you're after if you stop looking so hard.

The new attraction is a black tent with a painted sign of a crab, ink swirling round a purple moon. Inside sits Madame Sorrel, who swears she was born under the sign of the crab and that the crab has been walking sideways through her family for six generations. She reads palms by lamplight and finishes each reading by clacking a pair of brass claws together, which the children adore and I find faintly rude. Last night she caught me watching through the flap and beckoned me in without a word.

She didn't read my hand. She turned it over, traced a curl of purple paint still stuck to my knuckle from the stall sign, and said the crab only goes sideways when it's frightened of what's ahead. Then she asked me why I'd been walking straight at the same wall since March. I didn't have an answer, so I went back to the toffees.

We strike the tent on Sunday and head for Margate. I've told Mr Oakes I'll stay on for the season, though I'm not sure yet which of us I'm being honest with. Write back to the Canterbury address, and tell me if Mum still keeps the lamp lit in the front window.

Love, Ada
