Minimal cat head line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black outline of a cat's head in profile, with two pointed ears, a short muzzle and three whiskers on the left. The linework is smooth and tapered, with the neck continuing into a single sweeping stroke that ends in a fine point. The design is solid black on a plain white background with no shading or extra elements.

The gold leaf wouldn't lie flat on the damp Tuesday, so I sat on an upturned crate at the back of Dunmore's yard with my brush between my teeth and waited for the size to go tacky. Sign-writing is mostly waiting, and mostly one stroke at a time. Load the brush, let the bristles spread, then draw it along and lift at the very end so the line thins to a point. My father taught me that on a board in Market Lacey before the war, and he said if you could not lift clean you could not paint a shop.

Biscuit, the grey tom from the bakery, had come to sit on the sill of the window and watch me with the look of a magistrate. I had nothing else to do with my hands, so I took a scrap of sign card and a fine brush and drew him without thinking. Two pointed ears, a short blunt nose, three quick whiskers on one side. Then the neck, one long sweep that ran down and away and finished in a hair's breadth of nothing. It came out cleaner than anything I had painted for a month. Biscuit stood up, stretched, and walked off along the gutter as if he had approved.
Mrs Hollis came round on Friday to see the chemist's fascia, GREEN'S in gold with a black shadow, and she stopped in the road with her hand on her hat. She had not noticed the card I'd left tucked under the door of the shop, and I had not meant her to. She asked me to paint the cat on the corner of the board, small, where nobody would look. I told her the cat was not mine to sell. She paid me in barley sugar and a pound note, which seemed fair.
The board went up on the Saturday. By the afternoon a boy with a satchel was pointing at the bottom corner, where a single black line curved down from the G and finished in a fine point, and Biscuit was asleep underneath it on the warm step.
