Tribal circle tattoo on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot with a large black tribal design inked on the skin. The circular motif combines a central radiating pattern with curled spirals, hooks and interlocking bands. The solid black linework is crisp and the ink is uniform, with no colour, and the blurred background is warm and dark.

You learn the pattern from a dead man's sketchbook, found in a crate of ship's chandlery sold off at the Pell Street market. The sheets are soft as cloth. Someone has drawn a sun in ink, its rays curling back on themselves like rope coiling down a deck, and beneath it, in pencil, a note: keep the spirals open, or the sun will close its eye.

It is past two when you carry the crate up to the flat above the launderette, where the dryers thump through your floorboards and the ring road hums past the window. The city outside is all wet tarmac and sodium light. You trace the circle with a fine nib, counting the hooks, and notice the interlocking bands only resolve if you stop at the seventh turn. Each loop you finish feels like a door closing softly somewhere in the building.
By four the drawing is done and the launderette has gone quiet. You pin the sheet to the wall and sit back, expecting nothing. Then the streetlamp outside flickers, and the shadows of your lines slide across the plaster, turning slowly, as if the sun has been waiting for someone to finish its spirals. You do not sleep. In the morning the crate lid is propped open, the sketchbook is gone, and only the drawing remains, the seventh turn still wet.
