Cat face in mandala on foot

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A stylised cat face with yellow ears, teal eyes and tan shading sits at the centre of a symmetrical ornamental design. The surrounding mandala-like pattern is built from dark grey lines, dots and scrolls that extend down the top of the foot. The photograph shows the tattoo on bare feet against a dark background, with purple nail polish on the toes.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The people of Sallow Reach had forgotten the stars, so when the grey cat came up the dry canal with her eyes lit green, nobody knew what to make of her. She sat in the middle of the market square and looked up at the dome, where the old lamps had gone dark years before. Nobody could say where she had walked from. Her ears were the colour of late wheat, and across her forehead ran lines as fine as hair, curling out into scrolls and small dots.

A weaver named Orla Venn, who had lost three sons to the salt flats and had no patience for omens, knelt to look at the pattern. It was a map, she decided, though not of any place she knew. The lines folded in on themselves like a seed head. Where they met there were dots, some clustered and some alone, and when she traced one with her finger the cat leaned into her hand and purred as if a door had opened somewhere behind her.

Orla copied the pattern onto a bolt of undyed cloth over seven nights, one dot at a time. On the eighth morning the dome's lamps flickered on, one after another, in exactly the arrangement she had stitched. The cat was gone. Her paw prints ran out across the square toward the flats and stopped at the edge of the salt, where the ground held a faint glow that no one had seen before.

The people of Sallow Reach still hang that cloth above the well. Children are told to count the dots before they drink, because a cat that gives you a map will want to know you can read it.
