Tribal Darth Vader design being drawn
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A hand is inking a bold black illustration of Darth Vader in a tribal style on a sheet of white paper. The helmet, chest panel and sweeping thick black bands for the body are built from heavy solid shapes and stripes with no shading. The image is only black ink on white, with a dark wooden surface around the paper.

Mrs Okonedo had asked for the black helmet to be bigger than the man beneath it, so Tomasz had spent the whole afternoon on a stepladder at the Palais, ink pooling in the grain of the hardboard. The hall smelled of floor polish and last Saturday's cider. Below him, the sequins from the Friday band were being swept into a dustpan by a boy who whistled the same three notes over and over.

He had drawn the thing first on butcher's paper, the way his uncle had taught him in Gdańsk, with no shading at all. Shading was for people who trusted their hands to be gentle. A mask like this wanted weight. He cut the chest panel in one stroke, then laid in the sweeping bands that curled off the shoulders like smoke that had decided to stay put. Each stripe had to be heavy enough to read from the far end of the floor, where the old couples sat on folding chairs and argued about tempo.
By nine the backdrop was dry enough to hang. Mrs Okonedo came up the steps with her glasses on a chain and stood a long time without speaking. Then she said the mask looked nothing like the films, and that was exactly why she had wanted it. Her husband had once courted her under a fringe of black tassels in this same room, and she wanted something hard and plain to stand behind while she danced with the new man from the council.
Tomasz packed his brushes. He left the ink bottle open on the stage, which was the closest thing to a blessing he had.
