Stormtrooper helmet with roses and blasters
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A stormtrooper helmet sits in the centre of a wreath of pink roses with yellow shading and green leaves. Two blaster rifles are crossed beneath the helmet, drawn in pencil with grey shading and dark outlines. The design is shown on plain paper with a soft grey background, with the roses giving the composition a balanced, symmetrical frame.

The orchard wall had been built to keep out deer, but by the end of August the real trouble was wasps and boys. Mrs Ottoline Vane had her pippins ready on the south trees, and the pickers wanted them off before the weather broke. So the gate at Lammas Lane got a sentry. He came up the Calder road in a carrier's cart with two long rifles across his knees and a white helmet that gave nothing away, and when Mrs Vane asked his name he said only that he was on duty.

He took the post seriously. Each dusk he walked the wall, touching every rose that had climbed through the stones, pink as boiled sweets with yellow at the heart of each bloom. The pickers said the roses were his doing, that he had planted them the first week to have something to look at. Mrs Vane said nothing, but she left him a jug of cider on the gatepost, and in the mornings it was always empty.
On the last Sunday of the month a girl called Peg came over the wall with a sack, hunting windfalls for her grandmother's pig. The sentry stood up from the gatepost and did not lift his rifles. He simply held out a cutting, a rose stem with three leaves and a root wrapped in wet moss. "Plant that where the wasps can't reach," he said, "and you'll have fruit enough next year." She took it, and the sack stayed empty.
Next morning the gatepost held only the two rifles, crossed like a pair of tongs, and a crust of bread. Mrs Vane took the cider jug inside and found it full of rain. The pickers say the roses still climb that wall, and when the wasps come in August, they go round.
