Boba Fett helmet flash with flowers
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink tattoo design drawn on white paper shows a Boba Fett style helmet at the centre, framed by two roses, leafy scrolls and curling swirls. The linework is bold and even, with stippled dots and fine hatching in the petals and leaves for shading. The design is entirely black and white, with a marker pen on the left and a Darth Vader rubber stamp in the bottom right corner.

Mrs Ada Penhale brought the helmet up the lane in a flour sack on a Tuesday, the week the colliery whistle was finally silenced for good. Hal Mercer took it from her without a word and turned it over under the forge light. The crown had a crater in it the size of a thumb, and someone had once tried to fill it with solder and given up.

"My Jory found it in a shipping crate on the quay at Hayle," she said. "Said it was the only thing in the crate worth carrying home." Hal knew the sort of thing she meant. He had made a living out of other men's dents: pit lamps, ore buckets, the iron shoes of pit ponies. He set the helmet on the anvil and started with a horn-faced hammer, working the metal from the inside as his father had taught him, tapping gently so the dent rose like bread.
Three nights he worked on it. On the third, he noticed the drawing tucked inside the sack, done in pencil by Ada's granddaughter. Two roses, scrolls of fern, dots like coal dust. Hal scratched the pattern into the dull tin with a nail punch, dot by dot, the way the old engravers did, until the grey plate caught the lamplight in a hundred small stars.
When Ada came back on Saturday she ran her thumb over the dots and went quiet for a long while. "It's not his now," she said at last. "It's the village's." Hal shrugged, wiped his hands on his apron, and watched her carry it home against her hip, the roses catching the evening light like something that had decided to bloom after all.
