A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the Ashford Road reunion the hall smelled of floor polish and warm sausage rolls, and nobody could agree which year the bins had caught fire. Mr Pargeter, who taught chemistry for thirty-one years, came in on a walking stick and asked for a cup of squash. He still had every detention slip he had ever written, kept in a biscuit tin under his coat.

Tom Hadley arrived late in a black waxed jacket and stood beside the trophy cabinet, looking at the photographs of the 1994 netball team as if he expected to find himself in one. He had been the boy who drew a helmet on the back of every exercise book, the boy who breathed loudly through his nose when the head teacher spoke. Nobody had ever seen him cry, which was why Gary Piggott had once spent a whole term trying.

Pargeter tapped his stick twice on the parquet and asked Tom to come over. From the biscuit tin he took a slip dated March 1995. In blue biro, in the careful capitals of a boy who had practised, it read: I AM YOUR FATHER. Underneath, smaller, it said: Piggott, the register is in my bag. Gary, now a bald estate agent at the far end of the bar, put his hand over his face and began to laugh, and soon the whole hall was laughing with him.

Tom bought two squashes at the hatch and carried them back across the hall, one for the old chemist and one for the boy he had been. He set the second cup beside the window, where the red exit sign threw its light onto the glass like a halo, and sat down to hear the rest of the story.
