A flash sheet of six Star Wars designs on a cream background: Chewbacca with the word NGARRRr beneath, C-3PO with a STAY COOL banner, Darth Vader, Yoda, an AT-AT walker and R2-D2. Bold black outlines, solid fills and red roses and green leaves give the set a classic American traditional look. Most characters are coloured in yellow, brown, green and blue, while Vader and the AT-AT are shaded in grey and black.

Dai Pritchard had run the scrapyard on the Nant Gwyn road for twenty-two years and had never once seen a machine walk out of it, so when the grey legs came stalking through the wet bracken at six in the morning he assumed the sheep had been at the cider again. The walker stopped at the gate. Its head swung round like a lighthouse, and a little dome-headed thing riding its flank chirped at him in a voice like a kettle with ideas.

"Grand old morning, isn't it," said the gold one, unfolding from the cab with a clatter of plates. It had a banner painted across its chest that Dai couldn't read, and it kept brushing dust off its shoulders as if it had been in a scrap. "We need diesel and a sit down. Nobody has said stay cool in three hours."

Behind it came the shaggy one, all tangled gold and growl, hauling a sack of bolts over one shoulder, and the black-helmeted one, who stood very still at the back and looked at Dai's Vauxhall as though it owed him money. The old green fellow came last, leaning on a stick he didn't need, and lowered himself onto the wall as if the wall had been built for him in particular.

Dai filled the walker's tank from the red drum by the crusher, grumbling about the council and the price of red diesel. When he had finished, the dome-headed one beeped twice, rolled onto the walker's knee and projected a little blue map onto the wet gravel, showing a road he had never seen. The old green fellow tapped it with his stick. "Your yard," he said, "is the only place left with a gate that opens for us." Then the giant legs lifted, one after another, and went off over the hill, leaving Dai with a full drum, a bag of bolts he hadn't been paid for, and four prints in the mud that the council would want explaining.
