A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf had been circling the sheep pens for three nights before Brannoc climbed the ridge to ask the old woman what it wanted. Her hut smelled of smoke and wet wool, and she did not look up from the loom when he came in. 'It wants to be answered,' she said. 'Everything that howls wants that.'

He had never answered anything. His father had kept the herd on the low pastures below the fort and had died with his mouth shut, the way men did when the hill took their voices. Brannoc took the bone whistle from the peg by the door, the one carved with three turning lines, and walked out past the last standing stone into the grey hour before dark.

The wolf was waiting on the cairn, its breath clouding in the cold. It did not run. It lifted its head, jaw open, and sang a single rising note that seemed to come from the rock itself. Brannoc's hands shook. He pressed the whistle to his lips and gave the note back, thin and wrong, and the animal tilted its ears as if it had heard a word in a language it had almost forgotten.

Next morning a lamb was missing and the pens were whole. The old woman was pleased. 'You paid the toll,' she said, and went back to her weaving. Brannoc walked the ridge for years after, and when the wolves called from the far valleys he called back, and no one in the fort ever again asked him why he kept his eyes on the sky.
