Tribal howling wolf head on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black wolf head is shown with its muzzle raised as if howling, its outline and interior filled with angular, interlocking bands of black ink. The linework is thick and high contrast, with sharp spiky edges along the mane and jaw and swirling geometric shapes inside the head. The tattoo is black ink only, photographed close up on a pale leg against a dark, out-of-focus background.

Dear Tom,

The grey dog came back again last night and sat in the middle of Hallam's lane under the lamp, nose to the sky, and gave the sort of howl that makes the Dawsons bolt their doors. Mother says it is only a stray with a grudge against the moon. I told her I have never heard a stray sing so sharp, all edges, like a saw drawn through cold wood.

Mr Pell at the chapel says the wolves went out of these parts before the old queen's grandmother was born, and the last one is nailed to a barn door in Kirkby as proof. But Pell also says the sheep were all counted at Michaelmas and two went missing, and nobody has found their bones. I have stopped arguing with him over it. It is easier to sit on the step with the tea going cold and listen.

Last night the dog's call was answered from up on Scar Fell, a long rising note that did not come from any throat I know. Father's old whistle hung on its nail by the door started to hum. I went out with the lantern and the lane was empty, only the marks of four wide paws in the wet dust, circling and circling until they stopped at our gate.

I have left the gate unlatched. If you get leave at Christmas, come up on the bus and walk the last mile. I think the dog would like to see you, and I would rather not be the only one awake to hear it.

Your loving brother, Ned
