Every spring the beast came up the lane from the mill pond with its back full of buds, and every spring old Hester Wane went out with a pail of bran to meet it at the gate, because the beast would not step past a gate unless someone had asked it to.

It had no name that anyone had been given. The village called it Scroll, for the curl on its flank, which the children said was where it kept its tail when it slept. It ate nettles and windfalls, and the sprigs dropped off it like blossom wherever it walked, so the lane smelled of thyme for a week after. Hester planted the sprigs in the hedge banks. Her grandmother had done the same. Nobody in Coldharbour Lane had ever asked where the beast came from before the mill pond, and the beast never said.

The year the gate rotted through and Hester's knees gave out, her nephew Tom came down from town to sell the cottage. He found the beast standing in the lane with no one at the gate to meet it. He did not know the rule, so he simply opened the gate and stood aside. The beast looked at him for a long time, then walked in and lay down under the damson tree. By morning every bud on its back had gone pale and dry, and each one had split to show a single white seed.

Tom did not sell. He mended the gate, and each morning he left bran on the step and asked the beast politely to come in. It still goes slowly along the lane in the spring. Where it curls to sleep, the grass comes up in a ring the shape of its spiral, and no one has ever mown it.
