Sitting cat outline design
Black and grey · Flash
A single bold black ink outline of a cat sitting in profile, with pointed ears, a small curved face and a tail that curls upwards at the top right. The linework is smooth and continuous with varying thickness, and the shape is drawn with no shading or fill. The plain white background and centred composition make the outline stand out clearly.

The reed had to stay on the sherd from the first ear to the last curl, and Nell's uncle made her promise it aloud before he let her near the soot ink. Hesi kept his workshop on the harbour side of Alexandria, where broken jars piled against the wall like kindling, and he said a cat drawn in ink was a single breath held in one place. Lift the reed and the breath escapes. Nell nodded and bent over the potsherd, clay still cool from the kiln.

She began at the nose, where the small curved face turned toward the sea. The line ran smoothly down the back, thick where the spine bent and thin along the haunch, and she felt her shoulders loosen the way they did when the work went right. At the shoulder, though, a fly landed on her wrist. She lifted the reed to brush it away, and when she set it down again the tail had drifted a finger's width from where it belonged.
Hesi looked at the sherd for a long time. Outside, the real cat that slept on the warm step had woken and was watching the open door, its own tail flicking in the dust. "The body is honest," he said finally. "The tail has a hitch in it."
Nell did not argue. She waited until the cat stood, stretched and padded down to the quay, its tail lifting in one unbroken curve like a question that needed no answer. She kept the sherd on the shelf above her bed that night, and in the morning she drew the cat again without lifting the reed once.
