Tribal phoenix design
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black line drawing of a phoenix in flight, with its head turned to the left and wings swept upwards. The tail breaks into flowing, flame-like strokes that taper to points. The linework is solid black with soft grey shading along the edges of the wings, and the design sits centrally on a plain cream background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it has a temper like my brother-in-law. You want the bird on the hillside, the one the Harrow twins swore they saw burning above the quarry? Right. Well, that spring the reservoir went dry and the reeds stood up like old men's hair, and a girl named Orla Venn walked up to the cairn with a tin of pitch and a stolen kettle. She meant to fetch back the rain her grandmother had kept in a jar. Instead she found the phoenix sleeping on the stones, folded so tight its wings looked like a line of smoke.

She didn't wake it. She sat down beside it and told it everything: about the mill closing, about the boy who went to sea and didn't write, about the way the bread went stale before she could finish it. The bird listened with its head turned to one side, the way a magpie listens for a worm. When she ran out of words it lifted one wing, slow as a tide, and the feathers came up in long sweeping tongues of ash and grey, and beneath them she saw her grandmother's jar sitting empty in the hollow where the wing had been.
She went home with nothing in her hands but a single black feather, sharp as a scribe's nib. Next morning the reservoir was full to the lip, and Orla's grandmother was sitting on the step, singing, with the jar in her lap, full of nothing but light. Nobody in the village has ever found the cairn since. But every dry summer, if you stand on the quarry edge and squint, you can still see the flame-tail trailing down the hill, pointing you back the way you came.
