Tribal phoenix in red and yellow flames
Colour · Flash
A bold tribal-style phoenix rises upward with spread wings and a crested head in profile. The solid, flowing shapes are filled with a gradient from deep red at the head and wings to orange and yellow at the flaming tail. The design sits centrally on a textured, aged cream background.

The smoke had got into the wheelhouse before anyone thought to shout, and by then Ned Carew had the extinguisher in both hands and his eyes streaming. Alfie was on the deck below with the hose, swearing at the pump, while the Morning Sorrel rolled in a swell too long for a November morning off the Lizard.

It was the galley stove, or the wiring behind it, or nothing anyone could name by the time the foam was done. Ned sat on an upturned bucket afterwards and watched the grey smoke thin into the sky. His grandmother had a saying about the old bird that burned itself to nothing and rose out of its own ash. She'd said it of the boat's first skipper, who went down with the Gannet in 1962 and came back, she insisted, every spring in the shape of a gull.
They limped into Newlyn at dawn with the pumps going and the hull scorched black along the starboard side. The harbourmaster counted the damage and didn't say much. Ned walked up the slipway to the chandler's, where a coil of new rope was waiting under the counter, and stood a while in the wet light looking back at the boat. Alfie came up beside him, grey to the eyebrows, and asked what they'd do for the season.
Ned pointed at the stern. Under the soot, where the paint had blistered, a red crest showed through, the same bird Alfie's uncle had painted there years before. "Fishing's not going anywhere," Ned said. "Neither is that." The gulls wheeled over the fish market, and somewhere behind them a welder started up, sparks already flying.
