Tribal design on the back of a hand
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the back of a hand showing a bold black tribal design built from thick, angular shapes, spikes and a central ring with dots. The linework is solid and heavy with little shading, and the ink sits crisply against the skin. The hand fills most of the frame against a dark background with some objects at the edges, and the flash lighting gives the skin a slightly glossy look.

Nell Kettering had scrubbed the galley copper three times before the trawler cleared the Humber, and the grease still shone on her knuckles when the skipper came down the ladder shouting for the spare hook. "It's in the locker under the bread," she said, not looking up from the stove. The sea had got into everything on the Marigold: the flour, the salt cod, the men's tempers.

Her grandfather had cut the spiked sun into the galley door before she was born, a ring with two dots set in it where the eyes should be. The old hands swore it kept the swell from climbing the stairs. Nell had never believed a word of it, but when the boat lurched and a pan of onions slid to the rail, she caught it with a dish towel, and the door swung open and the black ring caught the lamp light like a wheel turning.
Tom, the skipper's boy, leaned in the doorway with his oilskins streaming. "Why don't you just go ashore, Nell? Your mam's got a house with a floor that stays still."
"The floor here stays where I put it," she said. "That's more than I can say for the men." She took the paring knife from the rack, reached past him, and scored a third dot into the wood beside the other two. Then she handed him the bread knife and the hook. Each dot marked a man out on the deck, and she meant to cut one more each time the boat came home with him aboard.
