Tribal swirl tattoo design in blue and black
Mixed · Flash
A hand-drawn tattoo design on white paper shows a large tribal-style swirl made of curling blade and spiral shapes that taper down into a long point. The linework is inked in black with blue fills on several sections, and the curled areas are shaded with small hatched scales. The design is centred on the page with plenty of empty space around it.

The wind had been backing all morning, and Teodora swore the sea knew it before the gulls did. We were forty miles off Lindos when the swell began to curl over itself like a sleeping cat turning in its bed, and Captain Ansel put the tiller hard over without a word. Nobody argued. You did not argue with a sea that had started spiralling.

The thing that rose out of it was no whale, whatever the cook told the boys afterwards. It was a long dark crest with scales along its back, blue where the lantern caught it and black where it did not, and it turned slow circles around our hull as if counting the planks. Ansel had the bronze hook ready. I saw his hand shake once and then go still, which was worse.
We did not catch it. Teodora, who had the best eyes aboard, swore it lifted one long blade of a fin, pointed as a stiletto, and laid it on the water beside us like a gift or a question. Then it sank, and the swell straightened out behind it, and the wind came round to the north as if nothing had happened at all.
Ansel kept that blade in a tin box under his bunk until he died. He never let anyone open it. When I finally did, after the funeral, there was only a little salt and a scrap of paper, and on the paper someone had drawn the same curling shape we had watched turn in the dark, with a single line below it that read: keep the wind honest.
