Tribal swirl with blue waves on lower back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A bold black tribal design with curled, swirling outlines and two solid dark dots sits on bare skin. Two parallel bands of wavy blue ink run through the centre of the motif. The design is centred in the frame, with the skin tone and soft lighting filling the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the gull that's been eyeing your crisps. The Pell sisters of Porthkerris were never apart, and people said the sea itself had stitched them together. Nan Pell kept the lighthouse and little Ada kept the boats, and when the spring gale came up the estuary, the two of them went out in one dinghy with a single oar between them, because the other oar had snapped in the autumn and nobody had got round to mending it.

The water that night was black as a stove lid, with a current in it like a hand pulling at the keel. Ada rowed. Nan steered by the lamp, calling out the swell the way her mother had taught her: wave, wave, wave, then the long one that means stay down. They reached the reef where the Lady Vesper had gone under and found the crew clinging to a buoy, half drowned and singing to keep warm. Ada hauled the first man in by his collar. Nan counted the rest. Eleven, she kept saying, as if the number alone could hold the boat up.

They got home by the grey of morning, and the whole town came down to the quay to see two old women and a dinghy that should have sunk. Nobody could explain how the water had lain flat for them all the way back. Nan only winked and said the sea had been courting. Ada said nothing, but she kept the oar that was never mended.

If you go down the steps at low tide, you'll still see two dark stones they left there, one for each of them, with the blue water running between.
