Tribal wolf head design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised wolf head in profile, drawn in silver-grey tribal-style linework with bold flowing contours. The wolf's ears, eye and muzzle are defined by solid shapes and thin cut lines, and the mane tapers into a long curling tail at the lower edge. The design is rendered in greys against a dark, textured charcoal background, with no skin or body part visible.

The ewes have been restless since the thaw froze back over, and by the time you reach the far paddock with the lantern the snow has taken the gatepost to its shoulders. Gerald's old collie is already flat against the wall, ears pinned, not making a sound. You follow her gaze past the hay bales to the hedge, where something grey lifts its head and does not run.

It is a wolf, or near enough, long in the leg and silver along the flanks where the lantern catches it. You have heard talk of them coming down off the hill since the estate let the pair loose, and you have always thought it was pub talk. The animal holds your gaze the way a man holds a bet he has already won. Its mane rises in a dark ridge that tapers down into a curl of tail, and for a moment the frost on the hedge seems to be drawing the same pattern in the air, a line that bends back on itself and goes nowhere you can follow.
You do not raise the rifle. Your grandfather taught you that the one who stays still and lets the animal decide has the better hand, so you set the lantern down in the snow and lower your voice to the dog. The wolf takes a step, then another, and turns along the hedge toward the ridge with a deliberate slowness, as if it has simply remembered an appointment. The collie whines once and stays where she is.
In the morning you find the tracks, big and unhurried, circling the fold before they head away over the top of the hill. Nothing is missing. One of the ewes has twins in the shed, and you carry the second lamb in under your coat while the first one fights you. By noon the snow has filled the prints, and you cannot tell which marks were the wolf's and which were your own.
