Triforce sunburst design with rays and dots
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black triangle with an inverted triangle cut from its centre sits inside a circle. The circle has flame-like scalloped edges, with tapered spikes and trailing dots radiating outwards. The design is flat black on a white background with no shading, and no skin or body part is visible.

The sun had already dropped behind the gasworks when Mrs Tilly Frane pressed the brass key into your palm and told you not to look at the sign until the bulbs were lit. Wick Street was slick with rain, and the ladder rang under your boots as you climbed past the shuttered tailor's and the chip shop with its grease-clouded window. Above the bakehouse door, the board had waited since spring, its circle of cream enamel scorched at the edges where the ovens had breathed on it for forty years.

You had painted the emblem a dozen times in your head before you touched the brush: three solid black triangles, the top one whole, the lower pair fused into a wedge, and a hollow inverted triangle left at their heart so the eye had somewhere to rest. Round the rim you flicked the flames, tongues curling back on themselves as if chasing a draught, then the long tapered rays shooting into the dark with their trail of dots like sparks thrown from a struck flint. Old Mr Vell had said every shop needs one space nobody can buy, and when your hand slipped and the inner triangle came out lopsided, you let it stand.
At ten the bulbs caught one by one, and the whole board seemed to ignite. A boy from the flats stood on the kerb with a paper bag of yesterday's crusts, staring up as though the rays might lift him off the pavement. You climbed down with paint on your knuckles and the key still warm in your pocket. He pointed at the hollow triangle and asked what was missing. You told him nothing was missing, that it was just the part that let the light through.
