The boats of Hallow Cove went out on the thin moon, because the herring came up to feed under a sky with no light in it, and everyone knew a fleet that sailed under a full moon came home with nothing but glare in its nets. Nine boats cleared the harbour wall that night. Ellen Marr, nine years old and left on the quay with her grandmother's knitting, counted them twice, once as they went out and once as they vanished into the grey.

Her grandmother, Ada, kept a bowl of sea water on the sill and said the moon lived in it. When the boats had gone past the Black Stacks, Ellen carried the bowl down to the steps and looked. The crescent sat on the water like a curled shell, and around its rim someone had painted petals, rings and little dots, the way old women cut lace. She tipped the bowl. The moon broke into nine small bright pieces and drifted north, each one heading for a different boat.

The wind rose and the boats did not return by dawn. Ada pulled on her shawl and walked the cliff path, and Ellen followed with the bowl held to her chest so the sea would not spill. At the Black Stacks the mist tore open for a breath, and there they were: nine sails bunched together on the water, tight as a pyramid of gulls, one of them dark with tar. Then the mist closed. Ellen knelt on the wet rock and tipped the bowl back into the sea, and the moon slid home beneath the waves.

By noon the nine boats were tied up at the quay, heavy with herring. Ellen took a stub of chalk from her pocket and drew nine triangles on the harbour wall, some filled in, some left hollow, one for every hull that had come back. Ada looked at them and said nothing. At the next thin moon the fleet went out again, and Ellen counted them twice.
