Triquetra knot design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black triquetra, a three-pointed interlaced knot made of three looping arcs, shown as a flat graphic on white. The linework is uniform and thick, with each arc passing over and under the next to form the continuous knot. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with no shading or colour.

At Hollin Vale the old porters said a ward kept three watches, and a night was only got through when all three were kept. Mae Tolland had the first, from ten until two, with a torch in her cardigan pocket and a flask of stewed tea she never finished. Ruth Okafor had the middle, when the corridors went quiet and the drips ticked like slow clocks. Nell Gaunt had the last, which was the hard one, because it ended when the windows began to grey.

One February the bed at the end of Bay C had a man in it who would not sleep. He kept asking for someone to hold the cord of his call bell, not press it, only hold it. Mae sat with him and passed the cord to Ruth when her watch ended, and Ruth passed it to Nell, going over the top of the cord and then under, the way you would hand a rope to someone standing on a wet step. Nobody had told them to do it that way. It simply came out that way, arc after arc.
At ten past five the man slept. Nell tried to tie off the cord at the nurses' station, but the loop would not break; every end she found led back into another. The day sister came in with her coat still wet from the car park and found the three of them standing in a ring around the bell, not speaking, each one holding the same thread.
Nell says the knot is still on Bay C, though nobody has ever untied it. When a new nurse takes the first watch, the older ones tell her to go over and under, and to pass the cord on before the grey comes.
