Triquetra trinity knot design

Black and grey · Flash

A black outline drawing of a triquetra, a three-pointed knot made from three interlaced loops that form one continuous shape. The linework is even in weight, and the over and under crossings are shown by breaks in the lines. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Sit closer, the wind is coming over the col and it likes to listen. You want the story of the three roads? Then mind the fire, because this one is tied in the middle like a bootlace.

Up past the snow line there are three paths that look like separate paths until you stand on the saddle. Each one climbs from a different valley, the Ash, the Heron and the Low Water, and each one goes over the top. Nobody ever walked all three in one day. The old drovers said that if you went up the Ash road you would come down the Heron road on the far side, and if you went up the Heron you would come down the Low Water, and if you went up the Low Water you would find yourself back at the Ash gate, a little older, with a sheep you never bought.

Three brothers from the Ash valley, Tam, Gil and Rhys, quarrelled over a single ewe and a single inheritance, and each took a road to prove he was the one who knew the way. They did not come back down. Their mother climbed up after them with a coil of wool and a knife. At the saddle she found three flat stones set in a ring, and the roads wound round one another so tight she could not tell which was which.

She sat down on the cold rock and began to unpick the wool, one loop over, one loop under, the way her own mother had taught her to mend a fleece. By morning she had found the thread that led her home. The brothers, so the story goes, were never lost. They were only going round.
