Troll doll with flowers and crystals

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A black outline drawing of a smiling troll doll with tall, flame-like hair, a heart outlined in dots on its body, and a large flower with crystal shapes on each side. Dotted arcs frame the figure on either side. The drawing uses clean, even linework with no shading or colour, on a pale sheet of paper.

Sit down, sit down, the chairs at the back are the sturdy ones, and mind the bandstand, it has had its feet in the sea. Now. The lights went at a quarter to nine, just as the band struck up the waltz. Pitch black, and the whole hall gasped, and then the hair started. Brannock Tuft had sat by the fire exit all evening, too shy to ask anyone up, and his hair went up like a struck match, tall and yellow and flickering, lighting the ballroom gold from wall to wall. Every couple on the floor stopped dead and stared at him.

Nobody laughed. Mrs Oddie from the ticket booth said he looked like a lamp that had learned its manners. So Brannock stood, pulled two marigolds from the window box, and walked the length of the floor with a crystal tucked under each arm, the ones he had dug from the quarry under the hill. He gave one to the drummer, who had the good sense to say thank you, and the other to Mrs Oddie, who pretended she had not wanted it.

Then he took her hand, and they waltzed, his hair blazing and her hat slipping, round and round until the last chord was done. In the morning the caretaker swept up the marigold petals and found a ring of small round prints in the dust, dotted all the way round the boards like a heart drawn in the air. The lamps came back on at six. The crystals never did go dim.
