Trust no one lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of black block capital letters reading TRUST NO ONE, set in two lines across the inner forearm near the wrist. The lettering has solid, even black ink with clean edges, and the skin around it is light with a slightly soft, phone-camera focus. A woven bracelet in green and yellow sits on the wrist, and the hand and a patterned fabric fill the lower and right parts of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The ferry didn't run again on Tuesday, so the post came over in a fishing boat, and with it a man who wanted his parcel sent on before the weather turned. He paid in coins, all of them the old ones, and watched me weigh the box as if the scale might lie.

I'd have thought nothing of it, except the box rattled. Not the wrapped clatter of tins, but something small and deliberate. When he turned to the window I saw the words pressed in black capitals on the inside of his forearm, close to the wrist: TRUST NO ONE, set in two lines, the letters square and blocky as if cut from a ledger. I have sorted letters for twenty-six years, and I know a sentence that was meant to be read.

He left without a receipt. This morning I opened the box, which I should not have done, and found a tide table, a key with no tag, and a second address written in the same square capitals. It is the house across the bay, where you and I were children, where Father kept the boat.

So I am writing to you rather than walking over, because I have decided I trust no one, not even the man who sold me the stamps. Come on Saturday. Bring the key I think you still have.

Love, Ruth
