TRUE lettering with loops on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The main tattoo spells the word TRUE in ornate, slanted letters enclosed by sweeping loops that form an infinity-like outline. The linework is crisp and dark, with the letters filled in solid black and the surrounding flourishes drawn as fine outlines. A smaller tattoo of the same word sits lower in the frame in reddish ink, set against a textured grey fabric background.

The magistrate of Ur-Sinel sent for Tamar the letter-cutter on the morning the river came over its banks. He had a lintel of grey basalt and a commission he would not say aloud. He wanted a word cut above the court door, in the old hand, with loops that ran round and back on themselves so that nobody reading it could say where it began.

Tamar took three days over the stone. She slanted each letter as if leaning into a headwind, and she sank the strokes deep so the noon shadow would keep them dark. When the magistrate came to inspect her work he read the word twice, then asked her to cut a second word beneath it, one his own mouth would not say before the king. He named it. He offered her a boat and a house on the high ground. Tamar wiped the grit from her chisel and told him she had cut what she was paid to cut, and that she had never once been able to make a chisel carry a lie.
He had her driven out of the town before the water fell. The lintel stayed where it was, above the door of a court with no magistrate to sit beneath it. Years later the children of Ur-Sinel played on the cracked steps after rain, and they learned to read by tracing the loops with wet fingers. They would start at the top of the T, follow the curve down and round, and come back to the same place with the word still standing, which was the way the old people had always said a true thing ought to behave.
