Nine mandala designs in a grid
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a three by three grid of circular mandala designs drawn in dark navy or black ink on a cream background. Each mandala has radial symmetry, built from petals, concentric rings, dots and interlocking geometric panels. The linework is fine and dense, with some shading and hatching, and the composition is evenly spaced and uniform in scale.

You wipe the lens before the gulls are up, because the salt won't wait for anyone. The prisms sit in their brass rings like the petals of a flower that has agreed never to fully open, each panel bent a little so the light leaves it at an angle. Every morning you go round them with a chamois and a tin of methylated spirit, starting at the centre where the bulb hums and working outwards in rings, the way your father taught you on the stairs of this same tower.

The relief boat is late again. The radio gives the shipping forecast in a voice that sounds like it is reading out a bank statement, and you log the wind in pencil: south-west, four, backing. Between entries you draw in the margins of the log book, a habit nobody has caught you at. You draw circles inside circles, dots set along the rims like grains of sand, petals stacked and turned so that nothing repeats quite where you expect it.
On the ninth night the fog comes in thick enough to swallow the foghorn's note. You climb the iron ladder with a torch and sit beneath the lantern room while the lens throws its rings across the wet glass in slow, pale bands. For the first time you see what the drawings were doing. Every ring is a path the light has agreed to take, and every turn of the mechanism carries it back to the same point in the dark.
At six the boat finally noses into the cove. You hand over the log, and the man from the mainland flips to the back pages and frowns at the circles. "Pretty," he says. You say nothing. Above you the sun comes through the lantern and throws its rings across the whitewashed wall, and you stand inside them until the engine cuts out.
