Seven chakra mandala designs in red ink
Geometric · Colour · Flash
The sheet shows seven circular, radially symmetrical mandala motifs arranged across the page, each with a printed chakra name beneath it. The linework is fine and detailed, built from petals, dots, scrollwork and concentric rings, with a few motifs more open and others densely filled. The ink is a single dark red tone on a plain white background, and the layout is evenly spaced with no body or skin visible.

Dear Dev,

The sheet Aunty Shanti gave me is pinned above the counter now, so you can stop asking whether I've thrown it out. Seven flowers in a row, each with its name written underneath in her square capitals. She made me copy the names before she let me touch the pen. Ajna, Sahasrara, Muladhara, and the rest, the way other children learn their times tables.
Muladhara is the one I keep getting wrong. She says it's the base, the one you draw first, and every flower sits on it, so we always start at the bottom of the page and work up. I thought she was being fussy. Last Tuesday I rushed a Visuddha for a customer from Keighley and she took the pen out of my hand, wiped the petals with her thumb and started again from the dots on the outer edge. "Dots first," she said, "or your flower floats off."
The Svadisthana at the bottom right is the only one she never finished. The petals are inked on one side and blank on the other, and the centre ring stops halfway round. I asked her why, and she said a lotus opens from the bottom and nobody finishes an opening. You just stop when the ink runs out or the light goes.
I sat with that for a long time after she went home. Then I took the old tin of red ink off the shelf, dipped the fine nib, and put one small dot at the crown of Sahasrara, exactly where she always lifts her hand. It dried the colour of rust on the lid, and I left it there.
Love, Priya
