Twin pine tree silhouettes on the calves
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching pine tree silhouettes are tattooed on the back of the lower legs, one on each calf. The trees are filled in solid black with a few small branch and foliage details, and the tattoos are shown healed against tan skin. The photo is taken outdoors on a pavement with a blurred green lawn and trees behind, and the wearer's tan leather boots sit at the bottom of the frame.

The sledge runners hissed over the frozen ruts, and Ada kept her eyes on the two black pines at the top of the orchard wall. Her father had planted them the spring she was born, one on either side of the gate, so that the farm would always have something standing guard when the snow came down. Nobody had told her the trees were supposed to keep watch until this morning, when the lane filled with white and the gate post vanished.

She found the old lantern in the cart and lit it with numb fingers. Below the pines, a shape moved along the wall, low and patient, its breath smoking in the dark. It was not a wolf. Wolves did not stop to sniff at the bark. It stopped at the foot of the nearer tree and pressed its nose to the trunk, then turned its head toward the second pine as though asking it a question.
Ada walked the lantern slowly down the lane. The creature lifted its head and looked at her, and in its eyes she saw the same stillness she had seen in the pines all her life, the patience of something that had outlasted a hundred winters and expected to outlast a hundred more. She set the lantern on the gatepost stump and stepped back, and the thing sank into the snow between the two trunks and was gone, leaving only the prints of a fox, a hare and something larger that had walked on its hind feet.
In the morning the drifts had buried the wall, but the pines stood clear and black against the sky, and the gate swung open as if someone had oiled it in the night.
