Two ankle tattoos reading Too Fast and For Freedom
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the backs of a pair of bare ankles and feet, with a red patterned rug, pink roses and purple orchids on the floor. Each ankle carries a short phrase in black spaced capital letters, with TOO FAST on the left leg and FOR FREEDOM on the right. The lines are crisp and even, and the image is in natural colour with a soft, warm tone.

The first bus to Morpeth left at ten past six, and Ruth Carr had been standing at the stop since before the pit hooter. Her mother's pattern book was rolled under one arm, the one with the rose bushes she had sketched all winter for the chapel fete, and the other hand held her bag tight against her hip. Behind her the spoil heap sat grey against a sky the colour of wet newsprint, and the air smelled of coal dust and somebody's frying bacon.

She had sat at Jean's kitchen table the night before while Jean warmed a sewing needle over the gas ring and dipped it in the Indian ink she used for drawing labels on the jam jars. Too fast, Ruth had said, because that was what her father shouted at the lads on the conveyor, and because the whole village seemed to be ageing in the space of a single shift. For freedom she had said second, and Jean had laughed and said that was a lot of letters for one pair of ankles. The capitals went on spaced out like a typist's, each one tapped in by hand, and it stung less than Ruth had expected.
The bus came round the bend with its headlamps still on, and the driver leaned across to open the doors. Where to, pet? Newcastle, Ruth said, then, after a pause she had not planned, London. He nodded as if he had carried a thousand girls with a thousand cardboard cases to the same two places, and he did not ask about the rolled book or the bag. She climbed the step, found a seat by the window, and only then noticed a rose petal stuck to the heel of her shoe, pink and bruised from the kitchen floor where her mother had dropped the vase. She pressed it flat against the rail before the bus pulled away.
