Two elephants with a red heart on a shoulder blade
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon elephants face each other in black outline, one smaller than the other, with their trunks meeting beneath a small solid red heart. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the simple outlines leave the bodies unfilled. The design sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, photographed from behind against a plain indoor background.

The river had dried to a grey seam by the time Pim reached the bend, and Ansel was already standing on the far bank, pretending he had not been waiting since noon.

She had come four days from the salt flats with a cloth bag of pale pebbles and a bad hip she would not admit to. Every evening she counted the stars over the scrub, and every morning she lost count of the thorn trees she passed, each one a little more like the one at home. Ansel's last letter, carried by a goat-herd who could not read it, had said only: come before the rains, the bank is wide enough for two.
The mud between them was too soft to cross, so they did what old friends do and leaned out, trunk to trunk, until the tips curled together over the cracked ground. Ansel's trunk was rough as bark and smelled of woodsmoke. Pim laughed, the laugh shook the thorn branch above them, and a single red berry dropped into the space where their trunks met. Ansel caught it neatly, as if he had practised, and pressed it into her palm.
"For the walk back," he said. "Keep it in your bag with the pebbles."
She kept it. Years later, when the river finally ran again and the two of them had grown slow and grey, she would still find it at the bottom of the bag, shrivelled and bright, and think it was the most sensible gift anyone had ever given her.
