Two birds perched on a branch

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of two small birds sit close together on a leafless branch that stretches diagonally across the skin. The shapes are filled with flat black ink, with the thin twigs drawn in clean, slightly textured linework. The tattoo sits on a warm, pinkish skin tone with the subject placed centrally against a plain background.

The rain has been coming sideways across the wholesale market since six, and by eleven the cardboard under the awnings has gone soft at the corners. You stand beside Mrs Okonedo's stall with a paper cup of tea going cold in your hands, watching a pet-shop man haggle over a crate of finches. He wants them cheaper. She tells him finches sing better in wet weather, which is a lie, and you both know it.

Near the back, where the lorries reverse in, a tray of ash perches sits under a sheet of plastic. Someone has carved them from a single fallen bough, and on the end of one, two sparrows are pressed together as though the cold has made them careless. You have been looking at them for twenty minutes. You know they are only wood and ink, the carver's thumbprint still caught in the grain, but the rain keeps beading on their backs and you find you do not want to leave.

When Mrs Okonedo finally asks whether you are buying anything, you ask the price of the perch. Four pounds, she says, without lifting her eyes from her ledger. You pay in coins that are damp from your pocket and tuck the perch inside your coat, the wood resting against your side all the way to the bus shelter. The sparrows stay where they are, shoulder to shoulder, and the rain runs off the shelter roof in a thin grey sheet. For once today, something you are carrying is dry.
