Two birds with keys and a banner
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows two detailed, stylised birds facing each other, with a skeleton key between them and a keyhole in an oval frame below. A ribbon banner across the top carries the words YOU HOLD THE KEY, and leaves and a ring of small keys surround the lower half. The work uses fine black linework with dotted and feathered hatching on cream paper, with no colour.

Mae had counted the windfalls twice before Aunt Ruth came down the orchard rows with the cider jug, and she still had three short of the ledger. The Pearmain trees had dropped early that year, and the grass beneath them was sweet and brown with wasps. Two blackbirds sat on the wall of the old press house, watching her the way they watched everything, as if she owed them a share.

"You're sulking," Ruth said, and set the jug on the flat stone. "Your father never sulked over apples."
Mae didn't answer. Her father had padlocked the press house the week he left for Hereford, and the key had gone with him on his watch chain. Nobody in the village had a second one. The iron keyhole in the door had rusted to the colour of dead leaves, and she had stopped trying to see through it.
Ruth tipped the jug and poured two cups without asking. "Take that to him when you're done. He'll want something after the lorry." Then she nodded up at the eaves. Where the blackbirds had been perched, a small brass key now hung from a nail on a loop of green string, the one her mother used to wind the clock. Mae stared at it. Ruth must have hung it there in spring and never said a word. The string was new.
Mae climbed onto the stone and lifted the key down. Behind her the old door swung open without a sound.
