Two black and grey roses on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two shaded roses with surrounding leaves and stems sit on the outer thigh, one higher near the hip and one lower near the knee, with a dark fabric band crossing between them. The petals are rendered with soft grey gradients and darker shadow edges, and the leaves have fine vein detail. The image is in black ink and greys, with the roses framed diagonally across the leg against a pale background.

The Gaiety's ballroom smelled of Brylcreem and spilt stout on Sunday nights, and by the third waltz the floorboards had gone soft beneath your heels. Mr Dunmore, who ran the place with a clipboard and no patience, had strung a black velvet rope across the back stairs to keep the band from slipping out for cigarettes. Nell Garrity was meant to be dancing with the bank clerk. Instead she stood by the rope turning two paper roses over in her fingers, waiting for you to look up.

She had bought them from a stall on Carrick Street for a penny each, one pale as dishwater, the other dark as coal smoke. She pinned the pale one high on her sash, where the velvet could not reach it, and held the dark one out to you across the rope. That one was for later, she said. When you asked later when, she only nodded at the bandleader, who was tapping his baton on the piano lid as though counting out his wages.
The clerk came over at last with his hair oiled flat and his hands already sweating. Nell let him take her elbow and steer her onto the floor, and you watched her step through the waltz with the careful grace of someone carrying a full cup. Near the end of the tune she looked back across the room at you. You still had the dark rose in your palm, its paper petals gone soft from the heat of your hand, and you understood it had never been meant for a dance at all.
