Two black bands on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm shows two parallel solid black bands wrapping around the arm, one above the other with a small gap between them. The lines are crisp and even, with flat black ink and no shading, set against smooth skin. The grey sweater sleeve and plain pale background keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Hendry kept the walled orchard at Coldharbour, and he would not let anyone else bind the young trees. Every spring he took a length of black tarred cord from his coat pocket, wound it twice around each sapling just above the graft, and knotted it on the north side. The village children thought it was a charm against blight. His daughter Mercy thought it was a lazy man's way of marking rows. Hendry only said that a graft was a promise made in two halves, and the cord kept the halves from wandering apart until they had agreed.

One hard March the frost came in before the sap had risen, and the pear tree by the gate went grey and stayed grey. Mercy took her knife to the cords that April, meaning to free the trunk and let it lie down on the mulch. When she cut the first ring, the bark beneath did not split. It had grown over the tarred line and sunk it into the wood, so that two dark bands sat under the skin like old rope in a hedge. Between them the bark had swelled into a narrow green ridge, the width of a finger, where the two halves had met.

Hendry came down the path with his coat open and looked at the tree for a long while. Then he said nothing about the frost or the knife. He took a fresh length of cord from his pocket, laid it against the next sapling in the row, and measured out a gap with his thumb before he tied the knot.
