Two solid black bands on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two parallel solid black bands tattooed around the arm, angled diagonally across the forearm. The black ink is solid and fills each band evenly, with a slightly textured surface where the skin shows through. The image is in colour with a red fabric edge at the left and a dark background, and the bands sit centrally in the frame.

Sit yourself down, love, the porridge is still hot. You'll not have heard about Ezra Farrant, because nobody tells that tale in the season, but I'll tell it now while the kettle makes up its mind.

Ezra rowed a coble out of Scarrow Bay for forty years, and every spring he took a tin of black tar and banded his oars just above the blade. Two stripes, never one. The lads down the slip laughed at him. Why two, they said, when one would do? He'd only shrug and say the sea had two ways of taking a man, under and away, and he was keeping count of both.
The spring the Constance Mary went out and didn't come back, he sat on the harbour wall with his own oars across his knees, scraping at the tar until his thumbnail split. His daughter Dolly was nine. She asked him what the bands were for, and he said they were to remind the water who it was dealing with. She didn't believe him, and I don't think he believed it either. But the next morning he took the tin down to the slip, and on the boat that went out searching, he painted a third band, thin as a hair, right at the gunwale where nobody would look. He said nothing about it, and he never explained, and that boat came home with four men and a dog that wouldn't stop barking.
