Close up of a small fine line tattoo of three outlined triangles stacked vertically on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Three stacked outline triangles on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a hand hanging at the side of a person wearing a grey top and tan trousers, with the tattoo visible on the inner forearm just above the wrist. The tattoo is three small black outlined triangles stacked vertically, each pointing upwards and slightly separated from the next. The linework is thin and even against the skin, with no shading or colour, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The paint had skinned over in the tin, so Nell Harkness stirred it with a bent nail while the tide drew back past the groyne. Behind her the lamp room ticked as the lamp warmed, and the wind kept trying the door latch the way a dog tries a gate it knows is shut.

Three daymarks stood on the posts at Gullet Point, one above the other, each a triangle pointing at the sky. Her father had first drawn them in outline before the war, because a solid shape got lost against wet timber and a hollow one let the grey light through. When a skipper brought his boat in on a dark night and saw the three stacked in a true line, he knew he had the channel under his keel and the Hob sand well to starboard.

Eddie Pring, the ferry boy who had come up to hold the ladder, asked why she bothered touching them up when the marks had stood fine for forty years. She dipped the brush and drew a clean edge along the top triangle. 'Forty years of salt,' she said. 'The sea doesn't read old paint. It only reads what's there tonight.'

By dusk the lines were sharp. A coble came round the point with its lantern low, and Nell watched its bow find the first mark, then the second, then the third, all three running true. She wrote the time in the logbook and, under it, in the smallest hand she had, channel open.
