Two black cats with sunflowers and poppies on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two black cat silhouettes sit side by side on the outer thigh, one facing left and one facing right. The cats are filled with pink poppy-like blooms and yellow sunflowers with green leaves, and the cats' outlines are bold and solid. The black ink dominates the cats, with the flowers and leaves in colour, against a bare-skinned thigh with grass and white flowers in the background.

Right, sit down, the ones at the back, and stop pretending you never hid in Mr Hollis's cloakroom. You'll want the cats for this, because the cats are the part that's true.

There were two of them, Marrow and Tansy, and they belonged to nobody, which is the only way a cat in this village has ever belonged to anybody. Marrow was the big black tom who sat on the bench outside the bakery and faced the road. Tansy was smaller, black as well, and she sat with her back to the school wall and faced the field. They hadn't spoken since the spring of the great flood, when Tansy ate Marrow's supper off the step and he went up the hill and didn't come down for a month. Every morning the bell rang, and both of them turned their heads the other way, as if the other had grown a second tail.

Then the council cut the verges, and seed from somebody's allotment blew into the field behind the chapel, and poppies came up through the gravel by the gate. By August the two of them were living in a garden of colour they could not avoid, and one hot afternoon Tansy walked straight through the middle of it and sat down with her back against Marrow's. Neither of them moved. The bees carried on with their work, and the old rector came out with his tea and pretended not to see.

That's how a quarrel ends in this parish, children. Not with an apology, and not with a letter. Two backs, a patch of sunflowers, and the slow warmth of somebody who finally stopped looking the other way.
