Sunflowers across the back of a hand
Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo
Three sunflowers with orange petals, brown centres and green leaves are shown on the back of a hand and along one finger. The petals and leaves are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, giving a painted look. Warm oranges and yellows dominate against the pale skin, and the design is arranged to follow the curve of the hand.

The seed van had not come down Dyke Lane since March, so when its horn sounded at the end of the lane Edie Marsh dropped her brush mid-letter and left a long orange smear across the R of ROYAL. Mr Tebbutt climbed down with a crate on his hip and a face like a wet Sunday. "Dutch stock," he said, lifting a head from the straw. "Gone over, mostly. You'll want the ones still green."

She carried the crate into the back room of the sign shop and laid the heads out on newspaper, the petals curled and papery, the centres packed with seed like a honeycomb of coal. Mrs Oake from the bakery had asked for three sunflowers on the hatch shutter, painted so soft they looked like they might give under a thumb. Edie had tried twice already. Her flowers came out flat as tin plates, and nothing she mixed would give her the warm brown at the heart without going muddy.
So at dusk she walked out past the last cottage to the field where Tebbutt grew his own, and stood among the stalks while the light went low and gold. The heads swung slowly, all of them one way, following the sun down behind the dykes. She watched until the western edge of every petal turned the colour of marmalade and the centres went the deep brown of wet earth. Then she walked home with her eyes on the ground, mixing in her head.
On Saturday Mrs Oake found three sunflowers on her shutter, each one leaning a little toward the open door, as if they had been waiting for someone to step out of the bakery into the sun. "They're turning," she said. Edie only shrugged and went to clean her brushes, though she had painted them to face the light on purpose.
