The lift in Harwood House had been dead since Tuesday, so Ray Okafor carried the letter up eleven flights, stopping on every landing to let his knees catch up. It was addressed to Nan Ferris in the looping hand she had taught him as a boy, the one she called her writing for company, where every stem hooked back on itself like a fishing line. Nobody else in the block could read it. That was the point.

Nan took the envelope at the door without asking who had sent it, because she knew the hand. She and her sister Pearl had invented the script on the balconies in 1961, when their father forbade them to visit across the courtyard and they began passing notes by clothes peg. Pearl had died in March. Her flat on the ninth floor had been cleared last week, and this letter had turned up in the back of a biscuit tin, sealed, with Nan's name on it.
"Read it to me," Ray said, though he knew he couldn't. Nan ran her thumb along the first line and her mouth moved silently, then she read it out in her ordinary voice. Two bodies, one heart. Two minds, one soul. Under it Pearl had written a single question in the same hooked letters, and Nan went quiet over it for a long time.
"She wants to know if I'll still write back," Nan said at last. She put the kettle on and reached for two cups, then stopped with her hand in the cupboard, and took down only one. Ray watched her carry it to the balcony and set it on the ledge in the wind, facing the empty flat across the courtyard, and begin to write.
