Black line drawing of a circular Tengwar script inscription, a Tolkien-style Elvish lettering design with no body part shown.

Tengwar ring inscription lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a circular arrangement of Tengwar script, the Elvish writing system from Tolkien's work, drawn in black ink on a white background. Below the ring, an English caption reads 'All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost.' The linework is smooth and even with tapering strokes, and the composition is centred and symmetrical with no shading or colour.

Ada had cut letters into gold for thirty-one years and had never once been asked to copy a language she could not read. The man at the bench had drawn a ring of curling marks on a napkin from the cafe on Hurst Street, the strokes leaning like grass in a wind, and set it beside her loupe as if it were a bus ticket. "Get it right," he said. "My sister will know if it's wrong."

She worked through the afternoon with the fine graver, lifting each stroke so it tapered to a hair at the end. Her apprentice, Jas, leaned over once and asked whether it was Welsh. Ada said it was older than Welsh and stranger than the hills, which Jas took as a joke and went back to polishing clasps.

The gold came up warm under the bench lamp. Ada turned the ring in the vice, following the curves until her wrist knew them better than her eyes did. Somewhere past six, when the traffic had thinned to a single taxi, she found she was drawing the last stroke twice, not because it was wrong but because the first one felt too quick for something that had waited so long to be made.

The man came back on Thursday with his sister. He held the ring to the window, read nothing aloud, and then laughed, short and surprised. "It says what Dad used to tell us," he said. "Gold doesn't glitter. We thought he'd made it up to get us to eat our greens." Ada put the ring in its box and kept the napkin, though she could not have said why, folded in the drawer beside the good scissors.
