Two butterflies on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, wearing a black top with one raised hand resting on her head. Two butterflies in black ink sit on her upper back, one larger and one smaller, near the shoulder blade. The wings show dark outlines and shading, and the ink is black with no colour, against a plain warm-toned wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the chrysalis in January, hooked to the underside of a feed bucket lid in the cold barn, its jade gone dull as pewter. Your father says it is dead, that nothing lives through frost on Hallam Farm, and he has the tractor to see to. You carry it into the kitchen anyway and set it on the windowsill above the range, where the glass stays warmest.

The days go slowly. Frost furs the inside of the pane every morning and you scrape a clear patch with your thumbnail before the school bus comes up the lane. Your mother hums over the bread and pretends not to check on it. You read the library book about hedgerow insects twice, learning words like diapause and emerge, and you start to believe the thing on the sill is only waiting, not finished.

In late February the case splits along one seam. A wing unfolds, orange gone to ash, with black veins like the lead in old church glass. Then the second wing, then a long shiver that runs right through it. Your mother lifts the sash, and the cold rushes in around your ankles. Your father stands in the doorway with mud on his boots, watching without speaking.

It climbs onto your sleeve and rests there a while, opening and closing as if testing the air. Then it lifts over the frozen yard toward the hedge where last year's milkweed stands grey and brittle. Your father wipes his hands slowly on his coat, looks at the empty sill for a long moment, and goes back out to the tractor.
